What you probably don’t know about plants
For the past 40 years, numerous studies have shown that recovering patients in hospitals who have either ornamental plants in their room or views towards nature like a garden or a park recover faster than patients who have no access to views of nature.
Let me write that again:
Just looking at plants speeds up our recovery. Not the touching, not the eating. Just looking.
One of the earliest studies made in the 1980s looked at patients recovering from gallbladder surgery. They found out that patients who looked out the window to a group of trees recovered sooner and needed less pain medication than patients who looked at a brick wall.
We are currently drowning in research after research demonstrating this. Why our hospitals and our cities aren’t drowning in plants, I don’t know.
But I hope you add more plants to the spaces you live and work in because they are so good for us.
